Clear Space, Clear Mind: Creating aHome That Feels Calm
My Mess - Nothing in its’ place
Have you ever walked into your home and immediately felt overwhelmed—even though you couldn't quite explain why?
Maybe there are papers covering the counter.
Laundry waiting to be folded.
A chair that has somehow become the official home for everything that doesn't have a home. 😂
Or perhaps it's simply too much stuff.
Our homes don't have to be perfectly organized, but our surroundings can affect how we feel.
Sometimes creating a little more peace in our environment can help create a little more peace within us too.
The Connection Between Clutter and Stress
More relaxing and how I prefer it
Think about how you feel when you walk into a clean, peaceful room compared with one filled with piles, unfinished projects, and things competing for your attention.
Your brain notices your surroundings—even when you're not consciously thinking about them.
Visual clutter can compete for our attention and make it harder to focus. And sometimes the things lying around aren't simply things.
They're reminders.
The bill you need to pay.
The clothes you need to put away.
The drawer you've been meaning to clean for six months.
The project you started but haven't finished.
Every time you see them, there's a tiny reminder:
I still need to do that.
No wonder our homes can sometimes add to our feeling of overwhelm.
Your Home Doesn't Need to Be Pinterest Perfect
I think this is important.
A peaceful home is not the same thing as a perfect home.
People live there!
There will be dishes.
There will be shoes at the door.
There will be toys when grandchildren visit.
There will be projects underway and days when absolutely nothing gets put away.
That's life.
The goal isn't to create a home that looks like nobody lives in it.
The goal is to create a space where you feel comfortable living.
Ok, so we like to live a little
Start Small
One of the biggest mistakes we make when we're overwhelmed by clutter is deciding:
That's it! I'm organizing the entire house today!
Three hours later, everything we own is sitting in the middle of the floor and we're wondering why we started. 😂
Instead, choose one small space.
A drawer.
One kitchen counter.
Your bedside table.
Your bathroom cabinet.
Set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes.
Then ask yourself:
Do I use this?
Do I love this?
Does this need to be here?
That's it.
You don't need to organize your entire life today.
Give the Things You Keep a Home
One of the simplest organizing principles I've learned is:
Everything needs somewhere to live.
Keys need a place.
Mail needs a place.
Shoes need a place.
The things that regularly end up piled on the counter probably need a designated home.
When something has somewhere to go, putting it away becomes much easier.
Pay Attention to How a Room Feels
Sometimes organization isn't really about organization.
It's about creating an atmosphere.
Walk into one of the rooms in your home and ask:
How do I feel in here?
Calm?
Restless?
Comfortable?
Overwhelmed?
Then ask:
What one thing could I change to make this room feel better?
Maybe you remove a pile of clutter.
Open the curtains.
Bring in a plant.
Clear your bedside table.
Put away something that reminds you of an unfinished task.
Light a candle.
Open a window.
Small things can completely change how a space feels.
Your Home Should Support Your Life
We spend so much time thinking about wellness in terms of food, exercise, supplements and sleep.
But wellness is also about the environment we create around ourselves.
Our homes should be places where we can exhale.
Not perfect.
Not magazine-worthy.
Not spotless every minute of every day.
Just peaceful enough that we can live well within them.
And sometimes clearing our physical space gives us a surprising amount of mental breathing room too.
A calming space
Clear Space, Clear Mind
If your home feels overwhelming right now, don't look around and think:
I need to fix all of this.
Choose one thing.
Clear one counter.
Organize one drawer.
Donate one bag.
Finish one forgotten task.
Then enjoy how that small accomplishment feels.
Tomorrow, perhaps you'll do another.
Because just like everything else I talk about with wellness, lasting change rarely comes from doing everything at once.
It comes from small, intentional choices repeated over time.
Your home doesn't have to be perfect to be your sanctuary.
It just needs to feel like a place where you can breathe. 🌿
